After graduating from Elizabeth College Guernsey Russel qualified as a Chartered Accountant (ACA) in 1986 in the employ of Reads & Company, Guernsey. Russel then joined M.D.B. Holdings Limited as the Group Financial Controller. Prior to joining Stenham Trustees Limited in 1997 he was a Director of Lazards Fund Management operations in Guernsey.
